Good Elimination Habits
To help avoid constipation, defecation should be allowed to occur when reflexes are the strongest, usually in the early morning following breakfast. Normal elimination habits differ from person to person. For instance, some people may have bowel movements after every meal; while others will have a bowel movement daily or every two to three days. Other habits good for elimination include a high-fiber diet (fruits, vegetables, grains, and cereals), daily exercise, and adequate fluid intake. Because they artificially stimulate the bowel and may alter its normal elimination pattern, laxatives and enemas should be avoided. Regular use of laxatives can produce dependence on them for bowel elimination.
