Overview
A Minimally Invasive Procedure is any procedure (surgical or otherwise) that is less invasive than open surgery used for the same purpose. A minimally invasive procedure typically involves use of laparoscopic or endoscopic devices with indirect observation of the surgical field projected on a high definition monitor through small incisions that require only a stitch or two to close.
At Mission Hospital, Minimally Invasive Surgery is performed by trained specialists resulting in less trauma to the body, less blood loss, smaller surgical scars and less need for pain medication. Patients leave the hospital faster and return to normal activities and work faster than with conventional open surgery.
Minimally Invasive Surgery can be performed both on an inpatient and outpatient basis.
Minimally Invasive Surgery results in less operative trauma for the patient than an equivalent invasive procedure. It may be more or less expensive. Hospitalization time is shorter. It causes less pain and scarring, speeds recovery, and reduces the incidence of post-surgical complications, such as adhesions.
