Hepatitis A, B, C, D
Hepatitis is a liver infection or inflammation. There are different kinds of viruses that cause hepatitis, including hepatitis A, B, C, D and E
Hepatitis A and E are contracted by eating food or water that is contaminated with Hepatitis the virus. They can sometimes spread by having sex with someone infected with the virus. They can cause fever, nausea, vomiting, jaundice and stomach pain. Hepatitis E is less common than A.
Hepatitis B and D are spread through blood and body fluids from an infected person. Having sex with a carrier of these kinds of hepatitis can cause spread. They can spread from mother to child at birth. They can be spread using needles or razors used by someone who is a carrier. Hepatitis D infection occurs only along with Hepatitis B infection and causes are more severe form of infection. Some people with Hepatitis B infection will go on to become chronic carriers.
Hepatitis C infection is transmitted in the same ways as Hepatitis B infection. It is more commonly found in those who have used injecting drugs. Some people with Hepatitis C infection will go on to become chronic carriers of this infection.
Prevention
Vaccines to prevent against Hepatitis A and B are available. Avoid undercooked or raw foods, especially seafood, to prevent against hepatitis A and E. Use a condom to prevent against sexual transmission of hepatitis B, C and D.
Treatment
More severe cases of acute hepatitis require hospitalization for treatment. Chronic infections with Hepatitis B and C may be treated with medication.
